Sand flies in dogs

Sand flies are small flying insects that you should be aware of. They can transmit pathogens responsible for severe diseases such as leishmaniosis. Sand flies are widespread and can be found throughout the Mediterranean area, in Africa, the Middle East, South America, and China. They are mostly active from dusk to dawn. They represent an almost invisible threat: sand flies are so tiny than they are rarely noticed.
The female sand flies will feed on the blood of animals, including dogs.

Along with the blood meal, an infected female sand fly can transmit pathogens such as Leishmania, responsible of leishmaniosis

Leishmaniosis in dogs

Taking anything from three months to several years before being detected, leishmaniosis can cause various symptoms including fever, weight loss, abnormal growth of the claws, skin lesions, renal disease… leading to death. Dogs are particularly at risk of this disease which can also affect people. Leishmaniosis is indeed a zoonosis. This makes prevention even more important.

Leishmaniosis is a severe disease caused by a pathogen called Leishmania. This pathogen is mostly transmitted by female sand flies during their bites.
